The Sim Golfer

What a golf simulator really costs

A golf simulator costs anywhere from $700 to well past $20,000 all in. A launch monitor alone runs $200 to $25,000, and the room around it can be a net or a built enclosure. Here are the four tiers people usually land in, what's inside each, and where the money really goes.

Where the money goes

At the bottom of the market, the launch monitor is most of the bill. A Garmin R10 at $500 to $600, a $200 net and a $150 mat make a $900 setup. Two thirds of that is the sensor.

By the middle tier, that flips. A SkyTrak+ at $1,800 to $3,000 sits inside a $3,000 to $7,000 bay. There, the enclosure, projector and PC are the bigger half.

Where the money goes in a serious home bay

Each part's price range. Nobody pays the top of every row.

  • Launch monitor

    $1,800 to $4,000 SkyTrak+ or Launch Pro

  • Screen and frame, or enclosure kit

    $600 to $3,000

  • Short-throw projector

    $700 to $2,000

  • PC

    $0 to $2,000 ($0 with a laptop you own)

  • Hitting mat

    $250 to $500

  • Software

    $250 to $500 a year

At the top, a built enclosure with turf and lighting can cost as much as the Launch Pro or GC3 inside it.

Three things move the price more than you'd expect. First, the projector. A short-throw unit that keeps your shadow off the screen costs $700 at the bottom and $3,500 for a 4K laser. The projector guide explains why a cheap long-throw one doesn't work in a bay.

Second, the computer. GSPro and E6 on Windows want a gaming PC at $900 to $2,000. Many retailer package prices leave that line out.

Third, the subscriptions. The MLM2PRO, SkyTrak+ and Launch Pro all lock features behind $200 to $500 a year. Over three years, that can equal the cost of stepping up a tier. That's why our best-of lists show a three-year cost.

How to spend less without regretting it

  • Use what you own. A laptop, a TV and a weekend of your own work take $1,500 to $3,000 off a mid-range build. The DIY guide has the build order.
  • Buy the launch monitor new and the enclosure parts used. Frames, screens and mats hold up. Launch monitors carry subscriptions that don't always transfer to a new owner.
  • Pick the launch monitor by the room, not the budget. A $600 camera unit that fits a 13 ft room beats a $2,000 radar that doesn't. The room checker sorts that out in 20 seconds.
  • Don't cheap out on the mat. It's the part that touches your body. A $100 mat that bounces the club costs more in physical therapy than the $400 one.

    Questions people ask

How much is a golf simulator?

From about $700 for a launch monitor, net and mat you run from your phone. A proper screen-and-projector bay is $3,000 to $7,000, and a premium one is $8,000 to $15,000 all in. A TrackMan iO on its own is $14,000 or more, and a built commercial-grade bay runs $20,000 and up.

How much does it cost to build a golf simulator yourself?

Say you build it with a mid-range camera launch monitor, an enclosure kit, a decent mat, a short-throw projector and a gaming PC. That lands at $5,000 to $7,000 all in, before turf. Getting down to $3,000 to $4,000 means a screen on a frame instead of an enclosure kit, and a laptop you already own. Building the frame yourself saves $500 to $3,000 of installation, but not much on the parts.

What is the cheapest way to get a home golf simulator?

A Garmin R10 or a Square Golf unit, a $200 net, a $150 mat and the phone you already own. Call it $900 to $1,100. It’s real practice with real numbers, and the simulator part looks better once you add a TV.

What does a golf simulator cost per year to run?

Budget $0 to $700 a year for software. You might stay on the free app or pay a maker membership of $200 to $500. Or you might run GSPro at around $250, or buy E6 Connect tiers. Electricity and a lamp or laser projector add little.
